Waldo Lake for EVERYONE! is seeking a rational state policy that provides access to Waldo Lake for the widest number of people while preserving its beauty. We are advocating a ban of 2-cycle motors on the lake and seek to overturn the Oregon State Marine Board's 2010 ban on all gas motors on Waldo Lake.
There are several reasons to allow EPA approved 4-cycle motors on boats on Waldo Lake. Please click here to read five reasons why Waldo Lake should be accessible to everyone.
Although the Oregon State Marine Board voted 3-2 on April 10 to reinstate the ban on motorboats, we were encouraged that so many people provided supportive comments. In 2010, just over a hundred people provided comments opposing the ban and this year, that number more than tripled to 362. That's an incredible show of support and we sincerely thank all those who took the time to write letters to the Marine Board and appeared in person at the April 10 hearing.
This fight is not over. Waldo Lake for EVERYONE! has an appeal pending before the Oregon Court of Appeals contending that the Marine Board lacks the authority to ban motors on Waldo Lake. Our argument is grounded in the fact that the Oregon Legislature enacted the previous 10 mph speed limit in 1967, not the Marine Board. Therefore, because the authority of the Legislature trumps that of the Marine Board, only the Legislature can repeal or amend the speed limit and choose to ban motors.
We expect the Court of Appeals to deliberate on this issue in the coming months and make a ruling later this year.
